Here is the official description for Swim into Social Studies 3: "Swim into Social Studies 3" is divided into seven sections: 1. Understanding the Globe. 2. Compass 3. Map 4. History 5. Whale Watching 6. Vocabulary 7. Just for Fun - Understanding the Globe: Students are introduced to the Parts of the Globe (Equator, North/South hemispheres), Parts of the World Ocean, Continents, Climate Zones, Whale Migration, Terminology (island, peninsula, isthmus, lagoon), and Latitude and Longitude. - Compass: Students are taught how to use a compass and the purpose of a compass. Cardinal directions are also explained. - Map: Students are introduced to basic map reading concepts, i.e., grid, legend, orienting the map, compass rose, and scale. - History: Students are introduced to the purpose and importance of history. Written records (ship's logs), fossils (paleontology), environmental issues (pollution), endangered animals (whales), and myths (unicorn, Moby Dick) help give students an idea of what is involved in interpreting historical events. - Whale Watching: This section is designed to make students more aware of the major and subtle differences of things in the world around them. The main emphasis is discrimination skills. Students go on a whale watching Expedition to enhance their discrimination skills. - Vocabulary: Students have fun with the language of social studies. Terms used in map reading, compass, and history are reviewed through interactive games.
