If you are using a VFD or LCD screen that is connected to a serial port then you will need to give the program proper access to the serial port. This is most easily done by typing: chmod a+rw /dev/ttyS1 (as super user)(serial ports are usually /dev/ttyS0 = com 1, /dev/ttyS1 = com 2). That gives all read and write access. If you would like to be more secure on your system then you could just give read and write access to the user who will be running the program.
